Public Meeting for Legacy Trail
District: One
Meeting Type: Open House
Date: Thursday, July 30, 2015
Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Location Name: Laurel Community Center
Street Address: 509 Collins Road
City: Nokomis
Purpose:
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District One, is holding an open house about a new pedestrian bridge over Laurel Road for the Legacy Trail. The public meeting “open house” is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Laurel Community Center, 509 Collins Road, Nokomis, Florida, 34275. FDOT will hold this meeting to give interested people the opportunity to review displays and talk one-on-one with staff.

The limits of the Legacy Trail are south of Venice to south of downtown Sarasota. The Legacy Trail at the Laurel Road crossing is currently a user activated pedestrian signal to facilitate Legacy Trail users crossing Laurel Road. The existing Laurel Road (CR 762) within the project limits is currently a four-lane undivided roadway.

As a result of accelerated population growth in Sarasota County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Sarasota County seek to alleviate the traffic congestion occurring at the trail crossing by eliminating the crossing and constructing an overpass (bridge).

A 90-foot-long pedestrian bridge will be constructed over Laurel Road. The pedestrian multi-use pathway will be 12 feet wide. The design of the pedestrian bridge minimizes impacts to existing historical monuments and the abandoned railroad tracks.

FDOT solicits public participation without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability, or family status. People who require special accommodations under the American with Disabilities Act or people who require translation services (free of charge) should contact Jamie Schley, District One Title VI Coordinator, at 863-519-2573 or by email at jamie.schley@dot.state.fl.us at least seven (7) days prior to the meeting.
